The Boot Camp provided an excellent thirty day plan to PASS the CPSM testing.  I’ve spent most of this year off and on reading the course textbooks and making no progress in my preparation.  It’s now been almost thirty days since I took the Boot Camp challenge and I’ll be taking the test next week.

How Did the CPSM Boot Camp Help People Prepare For The Exams?

The test strategy is very helpful and the overall course helps me narrow down my weaknesses and point out what I need to study closer

First, the Boot Camp provided a thirty day plan to successfully pass the CPSM testing.  The first weeks including preparation for the sample tests, a method to do further focused studying, more review, more testing.  A very complete, structured format was provided, along with a lot of resource materials.

Randy powered through the material and highlighted areas to focus on, as well as give us the mental approach toward taking the exam itself.  By covering all of the material in a short span of time, my recollection was fresh as I test myself in the sample tests.  I feel that I have a much higher confidence level going in to the acual exams.

We focused on targeted topics from the tests and learned test-taking strategy.  Plus it was good to hear about other people and industries’ examples of what worked for them and how they applied the methods/strategies.  Also, the diagnostic exams are an excellent tool.

Motivated me to read the books, take the diagnostics and schedule the exams within a finite window.  Otherwise I would continue to procrastinate.

ISM recently announced the expansion of its Professional Credentials program to include the Certified in Supply Management™ (CSM™) designation, which debuts November 15, 2011.

The CSM™ offers a certification option for those with experience in supply management and procurement who do not have a bachelor’s degree.

Three years of full-time supply management experience is required. A passing score on 3 CPSM exams or a current Certified Professional Manager in good standing are permitted to take the Bridge exam There are no exceptions to the requirements of exam qualification as they are used to gauge the level of understanding of each test taker.

Re-certification of CPSM credentials

Once earned, you have will need to re-certify every three years. The Institute of Supply Management (ISM) requires that re-certification be accomplished by 60 credit hours of continuing education over a three year period. These continuing education credits can come from any of the following sources:

College courses (in which you are the student or the instructor)

Professionally recognized contributions

Successful completion of the CPSM certification exam

Re-certification may be required per your employer. Some companies will reimburse you for your re-certification courses and CPSM certification exam, contact your Human Resources department for more information.

Why do B2B business owners invest in SEO? They know that people are searching for information. It also annoys them when they see a lesser competitor outrank them when they do a search of their key words.

Driving traffic to your website and blog is critically important. Having an optimal search engine results page (SERP) increases the chances of someone clicking through to your site. SEO is huge part of B2B marketing. No argument here. But then what? You invest in SEO, traffic begins to increase, but what are those new visitors finding on your website? If there isnt compelling content, youre putting the cart before the horse.

Now is the time to take a very critical look at the information on your website and carefully consider whether it is fulfilling the need of your B2B shoppers. It does you no good to increase traffic to your website if the B2B visitor finds no reason to stick around.

Begin to develop and publish content

Its helpful to begin thinking of yourself as a publisher. SEO may open the door to more visitors your website, but quality content is the buffet and bar that will keep the party going. Visitors will expect quality information. If you dont deliver youre one click away from oblivion.

So when it comes to content, where do you start?

The short answer is: Give the visitor all the necessary information to qualify or disqualify themselves as a good match for your products and services. I bet youre thinking, Id prefer to do that myself. For years the seller had the luxury of taking the lead on the sales cycle. Not so anymore. The ability to conduct an online search has put the control of the sales cycle into the hands of the buyer. You must be present (online) to win.

The long answer is to think about and list all the questions that you are typically asked during the sales process. The written answers to these questions are your first blog posts. Its perfectly fine to have short blog posts of 150 -250 words – in fact many readers prefer that. Its fine to have longer posts between 600 – 800 words. But anything longer than 800 words means that you either have a multi-part topic (i.e. How Over Reliance on Spreadsheets Can Hurt Your Business – Part 1, which would be followed by Part 2, etc.) or you may have a topic that should be written up as a white paper or eBook.

Dont forget to hyperlink to other pages on your website

When you have finished writing your content, check to see if there are opportunities to link to other pages on your site. If you are writing about the importance of training and how customized training yields the best results, create a hyperlink to the page on your website that describes your training services. If youre writing about a particular product, create a hyperlink to the page that describes the product in detail.

You may also wish to link to other blog posts that elaborate on a concept mentioned in your post. The idea is to alert the reader that there is more information that they may be interested in exploring simply by clicking the link.

Study website analytics

Which blog posts have the most visitors? Which blog posts have the higher average time spent on page? These are just of few of the metrics you can get from Google Analytics or other site analytics tools. Getting a better SERP is not just a function of how many people come to your website – Google also takes the amount of time spent on the website into consideration. The longer a visitor stays is an indication of how much authority your site has. Other factors go into how you are ranked, but giving your website visitor a reason to stay on your site will contribute in a positive way.

Develop and publish more content

Based on what you discover through your review of your analytics, develop a new list of topics to cover. If there is a product or service that seems to be popular with your visitors, give them more posts on the topics. If there is a product or service that youd like to see get more attention, develop some articles that showcase those topics. You might want to write about how your customers have used those products and services. If you state the customers name – be sure to get their approval first. But you could also write about it in a generic way, for example, 3 Ways Cloud Computing Contributed to Chicago-based Associations Growth.

Chemical Attitudes

Chemical storage in business isa serious legal and safety issue. For every example that hits the news, like the Orica Plant in Sydney, there are many others that have now been publicized but still pose a threat to their workers and the neighbourhood

Its an attitude thing.

Some years ago I came across a business that was involved in transporting 1,000 litre containers of hydrogen peroxide up a busy and narrow rural highway for a hundred km or so. He thought dangerous goods handling training for his drivers was totally over the top. Hydrogen peroxide breaks down to water and ocygen so it is very environmentally friendly and even approved for use in organic farming.

The problem is that breaks down very vigorously indeed! Significant personal protective equipment is needed when handling it. I questioned the result if there was a traffic accident between his truck of dangerous chemicals and a vehicle carrying a family; Suddenly he saw my pointhellip; after I suggested that he could go to jail for manslaughter.

No consultant should be forced intp being that forceful to persuade a client to change his attitude to something that is a legal requirement. Especially so when what is has doing was a legal breach.

Another factory I visited more recently has between1,000 and 2,000 litres of hydrochloric acid AND the same amount of sodium hydroxide stored side by side and the same bund is there to catch both. That is completely illegal! The must be separation and a different bund for each.

The plant engineers told me it would fizz a bit if they had a leak or they mixed. Fizz a bit!

They would be lucky if all that happened was evacuating the factory and the entire district for 4 blocks around!

A recent incident at another factory in Adelaide, where they spilt sodium hydroxide caused an evacuation for several blocks including both houses and other businesses.

Why do some people ignore the potential for problems, remaining sure they wont happen to them?

9 Steps to Project Success

Managing a project can be a daunting task, especially if it involves complicated processes. Even if you have received the necessary project management training, you may not be able to complete a project according to expectations. Many problems can arise during the course of a project, and sometimes, you may need advice from people who have extensive experience and success in project management. Here are some helpful tips that can help you make your project a big success:

1) Focus on Requirement Analysis

Requirement analysis is a very important aspect of project management. Give complete focus to finding information that is related to your project. Formally document every requirement that you have discussed with your customers. Then, let your customers sign the requirement analysis document, so that you will have an official checklist to refer to at the end of the project.

2) Communicate Regularly with Your Customers

It is not necessary to get your customers involved in every phase of the project, but you should at least let them know what is going on. Make sure that your customers are constantly updated on the progress of the project and problems that arise. This will help you gain the confidence of your customers and minimize the risk of errors.

3) Set Timelines Wisely

The best way to maintain control over your project is to set short and achievable timelines. If you are handling a big project, you can divide it into several sub-projects. Try to limit your timelines to less than six months.

4) Form the Best Team Possible

Great teams make great projects. Spend more time looking for the right people and hire the best people that your budget allows. Good employees are committed to their work, and they are easy to motivate.

5) Recognizing Milestones

Milestones are achievement marks in your timeline, and you should reward your team every time it achieves a milestone. By doing so, you will provide the necessary motivation for your team and show your customers that the project is on schedule.

When problems or risks are identified, you should take measures to resolve them as soon as possible. If they are not managed promptly, they may get out of hand and ruin your project.

Conflict Management: Understanding Anger and the Brain

Conflict in the workplace is an ever-growing issue and more and more of my clients are requesting programs on Managing Angry People, Angry Patients, Angry Guests, etc. The one question Im asked most often after one of these presentations is, Is it possible that when Im really angry, my brain just takes over? Because there are times I dont feel like I can control my own anger.

The answer is yes – the brain can be hijacked. Emotions can take over sensibility when we become really angry or someone triggers one of our hot buttons.

The cerebral cortex is the thinking part of the brain where logic and judgment reside. The emotional center of the brain is the limbic system which is more primitive than the cerebral cortex.

So where do you think anger resides in the brain? Yes, you got ithellip;When anger is being experienced or expressed, its primarily coming from the limbic center of the brain.

Now let me introduce you to the amygdala, which is part of the limbic system. The amygdala is like a warehouse of emotional memories and acts like the fire alarm for our brain. The amygdala can only react based on previously stored patterns.

When information enters into our brains, the thalamus acts like a traffic cop who keeps the signals moving. In a normal situation the thalamus directs the signal to the cerebral cortex for processing in a logical manner. If the incoming info triggers a potential threat or an emotional charge, the amygdala can override the cortex and BOOM – you have an amygdala hijacking.

During an amygdala hijack, a flood of hormones and peptides are released that cause a physical or emotional reaction. A surge of energy follows that prepares the person for the Fight or Flight Response, also called the Fight, Flight or Freeze Response. This hyper arousal or acute stress response was first described by Walter Bradford Cannon. The amygdala goes into action with no cognitive thought such as evaluating, judging or thinking; which means that there is no regard for consequence.

Now that you know what an amygdala hijack looks like within the brain, heres what it looks like on the outside:

The person is usually out of control and will say and do things they later regret.

This state lasts an average 20 minutes.

Although the adrenaline clears the body fairly quickly, longer lasting hormones and their impact can last several hours or even a couple of days.

How to deal with someone experiencing Amygdala Hijacking:

You just lost your job and while that alone is bad enough, the week long training session you were going to take next month just evaporated. The tradeshows you attended in order to keep up on the latest technology; the ability to obtain certifications in your field, all vanished. What to do? This article will discuss ways to improve your skills and make yourself more desirable in the job market at little to no cost.

To keep your skills sharp it is important to identify what skills a company desires. A 2007 Gallup poll stated that the average person will have three to five career changes and ten to fourteen jobs by the age of 38! To start, take a hard look at your current skills and determine see what needs to a) be upgraded and b) what new skills next to be acquired. An easy way to make that determination is by a search on job finder boards such as Monster and Careerbuilder and view job posting in your field for required certifications. For example, for a project manager, the Project Management Professional or PMP is highly sought after by the industry. The same goes for positions that require a Six Sigma Black Belt, which is a methodology used for reducing defects in manufacturing environments. A procurement professional has a choice of getting a CPM or Certified Purchasing Manager or if they are more involved in supply chain they can obtain a Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM). Today, more than ever, certifications are the price of entry to a new job. Once the type of training has been identified the next step is to make a plan to acquire the new skills.

But wait a minute! Your unemployed and can’t afford to pay for training? There is hope. The federal government, under the Workforce Investment Act (WIA), is providing training dollars to unemployed workers in order for them to upgrade their skills. The money provided is normally $3000 to $6000 for a given certification program. Check with your local county unemployment office to see how to obtain the WIA funds. In addition to federal money there are many good sources of information of the web for keeping your knowledge base relevant. My Linked In home page is set up to provide details on conferences, tradeshows and training in my interest area (Information Technology). In addition to providing details on events of interest, Linked In will also show who in my network is attending those conferences. I especially like this feature because before I sign up, I ask my contacts why they are attending the conference and do they think I would be interested in going as well. Often I attend the conference with them, which enables me to learn valuable information and at the same time deepen my relationship with my friend.

There are many excellent online journals that are free or for a small subscription fee. Brian Tracy, a motivational author, says to just to keep up to speed on your field of expertise it is imperative to spend at least one hour a day reading about your industry.

My library in Barrington Illinois (BAL) subscribes to an online book database called Books24x7 that is geared toward technical areas such as telecommunications, desktop applications, programming languages and security. The books are from recent years so the information is up-to-date. The information is free to anyone that has a BAL card and I am able to read the books from my home while sitting in my favorite chair.

Even though HR and hiring managers understand there is a recession going on (okay, a no-growth recovery), they will still want to know “what have you been doing while unemployed”. The best answer is not how you have been spending your time, but rather how you have invested in yourself. If your skills are not better than they were when you were employed, you have fallen behind your brethren that are still working and with each passing week you’re falling further behind. Do you ever worry about how to keep your more difficult clients satisfied? I recommend you start by establishing boundaries and rules about working with you and putting them into a contract or agreement.
