The Boot Camp provided an excellent thirty day plan to PASS the CPSM testing. I’ve spent most of this year off and on reading the course textbooks and making no progress in my preparation. It’s now been almost thirty days since I took the Boot Camp challenge and I’ll be taking the test next week.

How Did the CPSM Boot Camp Help People Prepare For The Exams?

The test strategy is very helpful and the overall course helps me narrow down my weaknesses and point out what I need to study closer

First, the Boot Camp provided a thirty day plan to successfully pass the CPSM testing. The first weeks including preparation for the sample tests, a method to do further focused studying, more review, more testing. A very complete, structured format was provided, along with a lot of resource materials.

Randy powered through the material and highlighted areas to focus on, as well as give us the mental approach toward taking the exam itself. By covering all of the material in a short span of time, my recollection was fresh as I test myself in the sample tests. I feel that I have a much higher confidence level going in to the acual exams.

We focused on targeted topics from the tests and learned test-taking strategy. Plus it was good to hear about other people and industries’ examples of what worked for them and how they applied the methods/strategies. Also, the diagnostic exams are an excellent tool.

Motivated me to read the books, take the diagnostics and schedule the exams within a finite window. Otherwise I would continue to procrastinate.

The CPSM Certification exam is an acronym for the Certified Professional in Supply Management Certification exam. The CPSM certification is an internationally recognized reflection of expanded knowledge, skills, and the abilities needed to be a successful supply management professional. This professional qualifications exam, overseen by the Institute of Supply Management, is used to ensure that a professional is aware of the complexities of supply management positions and new developments in the supply environment. The exam will include risk factors for supply managers, technology developments, sourcing concepts, as well as other skills that are considered crucial to successful supply management professionals both now and in the future.

CPSM Certification Criteria for Exam Qualification

To ensure the dedication of individuals who may become certified there are certain criteria that must be met before anyone can take the CPSM certification exam. Re-certification of CPSM credentials

Once earned, you have will need to re-certify every three years. The Institute of Supply Management (ISM) requires that re-certification be accomplished by 60 credit hours of continuing education over a three year period. These continuing education credits can come from any of the following sources:

Professionally recognized contributions

Successful completion of the CPSM certification exam

What Is The Cost Of The Certified Professional in Supply Management Certification?

Whether you have been working in supply management for twenty years or barely meet the requirements to take the CPSM exam, it is important for you to prepare yourself for the exam. This means you should study up on current trends in the industry, revisit previously learned material, and familiarize yourself with some of the questions that you may face throughout the exam. To gain certification you will have to draw on some of your professional experiences from working in the supply management industry and information that you have gained from texts. Your success in the exam depends on you and how well you prepare and practice supply management techniques and information.

Understanding the Exam

In order to succeed with your CPSM certification it is important that you understand the exam and test taking process so that you can properly prepare. Most of the exams that are issued are computerized; however there is no need for any special computer skills in order to pass the exam. There is an online tutorial available prior to the start of the test that will instruct you on how to use the computer to answer the questions that are included in the exam. Additionally, each test center has an administrator available who will be able to answer any questions regarding the test taking process and how to use the computer system. Be advised however that the administrator can assist you with technical issues but nothing related to the questions on your exam or content related to supply management.

Since each portion of the exam is timed it is permissible for a test taker to flag a question and return to it after they have answered all of the questions in that section of the test. This feature allows you to skip ahead to another question if you are unsure of an answer and wish to return to it at a later time within that portion of the exam. It is recommended that if you are questioning one of your answers that you flag and skip the question and return to it for further examination. In the Boot Camp Course, we discuss the strategies for approaching different questions so you can maximize your time management and complete the exam within the allotted time.

CPSM Certification Training has reviewed the ISM Report on Business for January 2012. We wanted to highlight some things we felt were important for Supply Leaders to note in order to take proactive action to protect their supply chain.

In one sentence, the ISM Report on Business for January 2012 shows an expansion in manufacturing and growth in the non-manufacturing sector. The numbers are positive for the economy because they indicate business is improving.

Question: How do we know these numbers are worth considering?

The ISM Report on Business Surveys the nation’s purchasing and supply executives who know the strategic objectives of their businesses and are take action to manage their supply chain. Fortunately, these supply professionals are willing to share their information that allows the rest of us to take action. To manage the supply chain, the executives have interpreted sales forecasts and market data in order to put resources in place to make their companies profitable.

Question: So what does this mean to us and what do we do?

For January, ISM Report on Business indicates expansion in the manufacturing area that tells us that the market will increase their demand for raw materials, manufacturing capacity, and logistics. Basic economics of supply and demand interprets this to mean an increase in demand without an increase in supply will force prices to go up. Supply Leaders should take action by securing contracts to lock in prices before prices increase.

Question: Are Supply Leaders and Sales Leaders linked by action and reaction?

The ISM Report on Business Non-Manufacturing Index indicates growth. The Non-Manufacturing Index looks at several other factors related to the supply chain. With growth in these areas, Supply Leaders can see companies are beginning to see inventory movement and growth in business activities to secure the supply chain. Increased Business Activity with new orders, new hiring, and price increases confirm the information derived from the Manufacturing Index that demand on the supply chain will increase and supply leaders should take action to secure favorable pricing.

Before we panic and secure the current prices on the market, look at one metric that tells us Supply Leaders might have a favorable negotiation position… Inventory Sentiment.

B2B Marketing: SEO And Content As Cart And Horse

Why do B2B business owners invest in SEO? They know that people are searching for information. It also annoys them when they see a lesser competitor outrank them when they do a search of their key words.

Driving traffic to your website and blog is critically important. Having an optimal search engine results page (SERP) increases the chances of someone clicking through to your site. SEO is huge part of B2B marketing. No argument here. But then what? You invest in SEO, traffic begins to increase, but what are those new visitors finding on your website? If there isnt compelling content, youre putting the cart before the horse.

Now is the time to take a very critical look at the information on your website and carefully consider whether it is fulfilling the need of your B2B shoppers. It does you no good to increase traffic to your website if the B2B visitor finds no reason to stick around.

Begin to develop and publish content

Its helpful to begin thinking of yourself as a publisher. SEO may open the door to more visitors your website, but quality content is the buffet and bar that will keep the party going. Visitors will expect quality information. If you dont deliver youre one click away from oblivion.

So when it comes to content, where do you start?

The short answer is: Give the visitor all the necessary information to qualify or disqualify themselves as a good match for your products and services. I bet youre thinking, Id prefer to do that myself. For years the seller had the luxury of taking the lead on the sales cycle. Not so anymore. The ability to conduct an online search has put the control of the sales cycle into the hands of the buyer. You must be present (online) to win.

The long answer is to think about and list all the questions that you are typically asked during the sales process. The written answers to these questions are your first blog posts. Its perfectly fine to have short blog posts of 150 -250 words – in fact many readers prefer that. Its fine to have longer posts between 600 – 800 words. But anything longer than 800 words means that you either have a multi-part topic (i.e. How Over Reliance on Spreadsheets Can Hurt Your Business – Part 1, which would be followed by Part 2, etc.) or you may have a topic that should be written up as a white paper or eBook.

When you have finished writing your content, check to see if there are opportunities to link to other pages on your site. If you are writing about the importance of training and how customized training yields the best results, create a hyperlink to the page on your website that describes your training services. If youre writing about a particular product, create a hyperlink to the page that describes the product in detail.

You may also wish to link to other blog posts that elaborate on a concept mentioned in your post. The idea is to alert the reader that there is more information that they may be interested in exploring simply by clicking the link.

Which blog posts have the most visitors? Which blog posts have the higher average time spent on page? These are just of few of the metrics you can get from Google Analytics or other site analytics tools. The longer a visitor stays is an indication of how much authority your site has. Other factors go into how you are ranked, but giving your website visitor a reason to stay on your site will contribute in a positive way.

Develop and publish more content

Based on what you discover through your review of your analytics, develop a new list of topics to cover. If there is a product or service that seems to be popular with your visitors, give them more posts on the topics. If there is a product or service that youd like to see get more attention, develop some articles that showcase those topics. You might want to write about how your customers have used those products and services. If you state the customers name – be sure to get their approval first. Chemical Attitudes

Chemical storage in business isa serious legal and safety issue. For every example that hits the news, like the Orica Plant in Sydney, there are many others that have now been publicized but still pose a threat to their workers and the neighbourhood

Its an attitude thing.

Some years ago I came across a business that was involved in transporting 1,000 litre containers of hydrogen peroxide up a busy and narrow rural highway for a hundred km or so. He thought dangerous goods handling training for his drivers was totally over the top. Hydrogen peroxide breaks down to water and ocygen so it is very environmentally friendly and even approved for use in organic farming.

The problem is that breaks down very vigorously indeed! Significant personal protective equipment is needed when handling it. I questioned the result if there was a traffic accident between his truck of dangerous chemicals and a vehicle carrying a family; Suddenly he saw my pointhellip; after I suggested that he could go to jail for manslaughter.

No consultant should be forced intp being that forceful to persuade a client to change his attitude to something that is a legal requirement. Especially so when what is has doing was a legal breach.

Another factory I visited more recently has between1,000 and 2,000 litres of hydrochloric acid AND the same amount of sodium hydroxide stored side by side and the same bund is there to catch both. That is completely illegal! The must be separation and a different bund for each.

The plant engineers told me it would fizz a bit if they had a leak or they mixed. Fizz a bit!

They would be lucky if all that happened was evacuating the factory and the entire district for 4 blocks around!

A recent incident at another factory in Adelaide, where they spilt sodium hydroxide caused an evacuation for several blocks including both houses and other businesses.

Managing a project can be a daunting task, especially if it involves complicated processes. Even if you have received the necessary project management training, you may not be able to complete a project according to expectations. Many problems can arise during the course of a project, and sometimes, you may need advice from people who have extensive experience and success in project management. Here are some helpful tips that can help you make your project a big success:

1) Focus on Requirement Analysis

Requirement analysis is a very important aspect of project management. Give complete focus to finding information that is related to your project. Formally document every requirement that you have discussed with your customers. Then, let your customers sign the requirement analysis document, so that you will have an official checklist to refer to at the end of the project.

2) Communicate Regularly with Your Customers

It is not necessary to get your customers involved in every phase of the project, but you should at least let them know what is going on. Make sure that your customers are constantly updated on the progress of the project and problems that arise. This will help you gain the confidence of your customers and minimize the risk of errors.

3) Set Timelines Wisely

The best way to maintain control over your project is to set short and achievable timelines. If you are handling a big project, you can divide it into several sub-projects. Try to limit your timelines to less than six months.

4) Form the Best Team Possible

Great teams make great projects. Spend more time looking for the right people and hire the best people that your budget allows. Good employees are committed to their work, and they are easy to motivate.

Conflict Management: Understanding Anger and the Brain

Conflict in the workplace is an ever-growing issue and more and more of my clients are requesting programs on Managing Angry People, Angry Patients, Angry Guests, etc. The one question Im asked most often after one of these presentations is, Is it possible that when Im really angry, my brain just takes over? Because there are times I dont feel like I can control my own anger.

The answer is yes – the brain can be hijacked. Emotions can take over sensibility when we become really angry or someone triggers one of our hot buttons.

The cerebral cortex is the thinking part of the brain where logic and judgment reside. The emotional center of the brain is the limbic system which is more primitive than the cerebral cortex.

So where do you think anger resides in the brain? Yes, you got ithellip;When anger is being experienced or expressed, its primarily coming from the limbic center of the brain.

Now let me introduce you to the amygdala, which is part of the limbic system. The amygdala is like a warehouse of emotional memories and acts like the fire alarm for our brain. The amygdala can only react based on previously stored patterns.

When information enters into our brains, the thalamus acts like a traffic cop who keeps the signals moving. In a normal situation the thalamus directs the signal to the cerebral cortex for processing in a logical manner. If the incoming info triggers a potential threat or an emotional charge, the amygdala can override the cortex and BOOM – you have an amygdala hijacking.

During an amygdala hijack, a flood of hormones and peptides are released that cause a physical or emotional reaction. A surge of energy follows that prepares the person for the Fight or Flight Response, also called the Fight, Flight or Freeze Response. This hyper arousal or acute stress response was first described by Walter Bradford Cannon. The amygdala goes into action with no cognitive thought such as evaluating, judging or thinking; which means that there is no regard for consequence.

Now that you know what an amygdala hijack looks like within the brain, heres what it looks like on the outside:

The person is usually out of control and will say and do things they later regret.

This state lasts an average 20 minutes.

Although the adrenaline clears the body fairly quickly, longer lasting hormones and their impact can last several hours or even a couple of days.

How to deal with someone experiencing Amygdala Hijacking:

During the time of an amygdala hijack, avoid any attempts to resolve a situation or discuss a solution. Theres little or no ability to rely on intelligence or reasoning. It is best to allow the person to vent and wait until their thoughts move from the emotional area to the thinking area of the brain.

What can I do if it I am the victim of Amygdala Hijacking?

After the hijack it is important to spend time to recognize and identify what your triggers are. I have an exercise where I have my workshop participants identify 2-3 of their responses to anger. When we go around the room and share, attendees realize just how similar or completely different people react to anger. By knowing what triggers our hot buttons we create an emotional awareness that allows us to consciously react differently. This may take a little time but it can be done.

Anger can escalate quickly, even when we think we are de-escalating the situation. By understanding the different responses to anger, we can prevent an emotional tug of war Self-awareness is the key to managing our own anger and is also the key to de-escalating anger in others.

How this knowledge helps keep you and others safe in the workplace

Whether it is a co-workers involved in a personality conflict, an angry boss berating an employee, co-workers who are under pressure to complete deadlines, or an angry client, customer, or patient, most of us have never been taught how to de-escalate another angry person.

By understanding how the brain sometimes acts like a bully, by being aware of what triggers our hot buttons and using de-escalation techniques most amygdala hijackings can be resolved without escalated violence.

How Damaging Is Procrastination In Your Business?

Procrastinanation afftects almost all workers in most businesses and it acts like a hidden cancers reducing your productivity as you or your workers resist doing what is needed

This is based on fear, even if it doesnt feel like it.

What is the reason that eith you or one of your staff be afraid of completing a task? Well perhaps you fear being criticized if it is not perfect, even if you are the one who may feel it is not good enough. Sometimes people would rather continue to procrastinate, while appeearin busy than get on with the next job. There are so many reasons that you can invent to give you an excuse to resist doing what needs to be done.

You know you need to do something but you cant seem to get started.

Our subconscious minds are programmed to protect us from danger and as times change and our needs change, we fail to update our subconscious minds.

Failing to start is nearly always called by a subconscious fear of change, and this even applies when the change will improve the present circumstances.

You see this so often when people talk about management systems. The real fear is stepping into the unknown and making a change, even when that change is simpler and better.

When you are fearful, you attract others to share stories to support your fear. Fear of too much paper, fear of extra work and time, fear of change. Fear is a much better motivator than taking the steps to get something done.

Can Radio Controlled Aircraft Be Used for Aerial Photography?

The term aerial photography usually refers to pictures of the ground that are taken from an elevated position provided that the camera isnt attached to some type of a structure on the ground. Aerial photos could be taken by a photographer, they could be automatically triggered, or they could be remotely triggered.

Aerial photographs are used for land-use planning, cartography, archaeology, environmental studies, movie productions, artistic projects, commercial advertising, surveillance, and more. Traditionally, aerial photographs have been taken from helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, kites, balloons, dirigibles and blimps, parachutes, poles, and poles mounted to vehicles. More recently radio controlled model aircraft has been used to take low altitude aerial photographs.

Radio controlled models are being used by the real estate advertising industry to take pictures of residential and commercial properties because full size aircraft are currently not allowed to fly low over populated areas of the United States. However, these restricted areas are fully accessible to small scale model airplanes and helicopters.

Because these miniature aircraft are not capable of flying very high or for a very long time, they will probably never replace full size aircraft as the primary means of taking aerials. However they have proven to be very useful for situations where a large manned-aircraft is prohibited or too dangerous to operate.

For example, a slow, low altitude flight over an agricultural field or a low level inspection of the transformers that are on top of power transmission lines are better done with a radio controlled helicopter than a large scale manned vehicle.

In the past it was relatively difficult to get a stabilized image from a camera mounted in a radio controlled aircraft. The U.S. government has gotten involved in regulating commercial radio controlled flights. Starting in 2006 the FAA has required that the person piloting a model aircraft needs formal FAA certification before he or she will be allowed to fly the vehicle at any altitude in the United States.

How to Keep Your Skills Sharp After Getting Chopped by N. Alan Wilson

You just lost your job and while that alone is bad enough, the week long training session you were going to take next month just evaporated. The tradeshows you attended in order to keep up on the latest technology; the ability to obtain certifications in your field, all vanished. What to do? This article will discuss ways to improve your skills and make yourself more desirable in the job market at little to no cost.

To keep your skills sharp it is important to identify what skills a company desires. A 2007 Gallup poll stated that the average person will have three to five career changes and ten to fourteen jobs by the age of 38! To start, take a hard look at your current skills and determine see what needs to a) be upgraded and b) what new skills next to be acquired. An easy way to make that determination is by a search on job finder boards such as Monster and Careerbuilder and view job posting in your field for required certifications. For example, for a project manager, the Project Management Professional or PMP is highly sought after by the industry. The same goes for positions that require a Six Sigma Black Belt, which is a methodology used for reducing defects in manufacturing environments. A procurement professional has a choice of getting a CPM or Certified Purchasing Manager or if they are more involved in supply chain they can obtain a Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM). Today, more than ever, certifications are the price of entry to a new job. Once the type of training has been identified the next step is to make a plan to acquire the new skills.

But wait a minute! Your unemployed and can’t afford to pay for training? There is hope. The federal government, under the Workforce Investment Act (WIA), is providing training dollars to unemployed workers in order for them to upgrade their skills. The money provided is normally $3000 to $6000 for a given certification program. Check with your local county unemployment office to see how to obtain the WIA funds. Put your tax dollars to good use by getting into a program today.

In addition to federal money there are many good sources of information of the web for keeping your knowledge base relevant. Harvey Mackay, a well-known business author, stated in his latest book How to Use your Head to Get in the Door that MIT offers a free lecture program online called “OpenCourseWare” at ocw.mit.edu. The available courses range from Aeronautics to Women’s studies and everything in between.

There are still opportunities to attend conferences at little or no cost. Many conferences offer their keynote sessions and expositions for free. I attended a telecom conference called Supercomm this past fall when it was held in Chicago, my hometown. In addition to attending the expo for free, I was eligible to attend some of the sessions, all for the cost of train ride. If I know the name of the conference I want to attend, I just Google it on the web.

But one of the best ways to find the lesser known conferences is through Linked In. My Linked In home page is set up to provide details on conferences, tradeshows and training in my interest area (Information Technology). In addition to providing details on events of interest, Linked In will also show who in my network is attending those conferences. I especially like this feature because before I sign up, I ask my contacts why they are attending the conference and do they think I would be interested in going as well. Often I attend the conference with them, which enables me to learn valuable information and at the same time deepen my relationship with my friend.

There are many excellent online journals that are free or for a small subscription fee. Brian Tracy, a motivational author, says to just to keep up to speed on your field of expertise it is imperative to spend at least one hour a day reading about your industry.

My library in Barrington Illinois (BAL) subscribes to an online book database called Books24x7 that is geared toward technical areas such as telecommunications, desktop applications, programming languages and security. The books are from recent years so the information is up-to-date. The information is free to anyone that has a BAL card and I am able to read the books from my home while sitting in my favorite chair.

Even though HR and hiring managers understand there is a recession going on (okay, a no-growth recovery), they will still want to know “what have you been doing while unemployed”. The best answer is not how you have been spending your time, but rather how you have invested in yourself. If your skills are not better than they were when you were employed, you have fallen behind your brethren that are still working and with each passing week you’re falling further behind. Sometimes even in the best-run of offices conflicts arise and they are never easy to deal with especially for a newly-appointed employee, who has not yet had time to get to grips with the culture and is understandably anxious to make a good impression.

The worst situations feature both conflict and confrontation together, and while neither is very pleasant, the best option is to try to take a calm approach and not react in a challenging or defensive way.

This is because the typical reactions to conflict or confrontation are fight, flight or freezing. In the first people will react in a challenging/defensive way, which may mean shouting or losing your temper.

In the flight response the person turns their back on whats going on in the hope it will go away and in the freeze situation the person can become passive or introverted because they do not know how to react. This can allow things to drift or become drawn out through indecision.

It is much better to face the problem using a calm and rational approach with a that has been planned in advance, but which can be formal or informal or can include mediation.

In the informal approach talking and listening aims to give people the time to express their feelings and concerns. This can often help to clear the air. It can turn out that one of the people involved does not realise that their actions or style of speech are making a colleague uncomfortable and this can be particularly the case if it involves individuals sense of humour.

It may happen that an aggrieved person feels their line manager is overlooking them for promotion and treating a colleague more favourably. Sometimes raising these issues in an informal way makes the problem go away much quicker.

if the informal approach doesnt work it may be necessary to raise a grievance and take it to a more formal stage and in this case the employee should use the companys grievance procedures, which usually means raising a complaint to your line manager or with HR.

The most common form of dispute resolution that an employer may use if the above stages dont work is mediation. It involves an independent, impartial person helping two individuals or groups to reach a solution that is acceptable to everyone.

A business relationship not structured to mutually benefit both parties will eventually fail if the goals of both companies not aligned with the business deal. Every B2B relationship that is implemented correctly will have several layers of corporate partnership training to make sure everyone understands the relationship and what their roles are in executing the details outlined in the partner agreement. The training should outline the communication processes for both lower level employees that will be interacting between the two companies as well as outlining basic communications and updates between executives. By maintaining an open line of communication, problems can be fixed quickly and allow small hiccups to be non-issues instead of festering and creating problems that can lead to the unraveling of an otherwise successful business to business partnership.

Mutually Beneficial Partnership

Every business deal should benefit both companies. This is critical to the success of the partnership. Make sure there is an open line of communication to fix problems. How To Train Your Clients On Working With You

Do you ever worry about how to keep your more difficult clients satisfied? I recommend you start by establishing boundaries and rules about working with you and putting them into a contract or agreement.

There are some people however, who tend not to read the contract or somehow forget these important details. This can be a real problem because you may end up working for free at the end of a project to make sure your clients remain happy when they finish up. Naturally happy clients are preferred because they refer other clients and spread good will.

Learning how to manage your clients is an important threshold to cross as your business grows. When I was working with private coaching clients, I had a two-page document on policies and procedures in my welcome packet that spelled everything out. All the rules were detailed which can make life so much easier for everyone.

In addition, I had a paragraph at the beginning, asking clients to read through all the way to the end, starting with a nicely phrased statement. Something like, Just so there are no misunderstandings later. The document ended with a simple question, Is that fair? Of course everything I included was fair and so clients signed up. Believe it or not, most people like to know the rules and will tend to follow them.

However, there are some people who will manage to forget what they signed. To address this, I suggest briefly going over the points with them up front so they know exactly what to expect, whats included, whats not and whats going to cost extra. This helps clients hear that you are serious from the get-go, before you do any work with them. You are setting the standards and training your clients how to work with you.

This is a smart business practice and will save you time and trouble later. If your client asks for something not included, you can simply refer back to the point in the conversation where you explained how that piece works. It becomes an issue of personal responsibility for them.

Occasionally, when you have a client who just doesnt pay attention or is extra demanding, you will want to stay in the role of good cop. Thats when you can have your virtual assistant address the problem and take on the role of bad cop. This way, the problem doesnt touch you and if anything, the person will be upset with your VA and not you.
